Your monthly cost in Ho Chi Minh City depends mostly on where you rent and whether your children attend an international school. A single person spends roughly 13 million VND (frugal) to over 60 million VND (high-end) a month; a family of four, excluding international school fees, roughly 35 million to over 150 million VND. These are approximate ranges built from official tariffs and rent data our site checked in October 2026.

The table adds up rent, utilities, food, transport, phone, insurance and leisure. Everyone lives differently, so treat it as a sense of the usual range, not an exact figure. Exchange rates used: 1 USD ≈ 25,800 VND, 1,000 KRW ≈ 19,500 VND.
Frugal means a serviced studio or an apartment outside the centre and mostly local food. Comfortable means a 1–3 bedroom apartment in an expat-popular area with a mix of local food and eating out. High-end means a premium building or villa in areas such as Thu Thiem or Thao Dien, with imported groceries and frequent dining out.
| Level | Single | Family of 4 (excl. international school) |
|---|---|---|
| Frugal | 13–18M VND (approx. $500–700) | 35–50M VND (approx. $1,360–1,940) |
| Comfortable | 25–40M VND (approx. $970–1,550) | 70–100M VND (approx. $2,710–3,880) |
| High-end | 60M+ VND (approx. $2,330+) | 150M+ VND (approx. $5,810+) |
⚠ This table is our own estimate from tariffs and rent data. For comparison, Numbeo (October 2026) puts monthly costs excluding rent at about 12.6M VND for a single person and about 44.7M VND for a family of four — but those are also rough, user-submitted figures.
Rent is the largest cost. Below are asking-rent ranges Saigon Place collected for 71 apartment buildings in October 2026, grouped by area (furnished listings, USD per month). They are listing prices, not final deals; floor, view, furniture and negotiation all change the result.
Districts were abolished in the July 2025 administrative merger, but old names such as District 7 or District 2 are still widely used when house-hunting.
| Area (buildings) | 2-bedroom | 3-bedroom |
|---|---|---|
| Thu Thiem (8) | $800–2,480 | $1,500–5,310 |
| Thao Dien (9) | $610–1,900 | $920–3,500 |
| Former District 1 (3) | $760–2,200 | $1,070–3,200 |
| Phu My Hung (11) | $570–1,400 | $900–2,290 |
| An Phu (8) | $440–1,340 | $600–2,200 |
| Binh Thanh (4) | $570–1,300 | $760–2,000 |
| Other District 7 (6) | $500–1,070 | $650–1,530 |
| Grand Park, former District 9 (4) | $230–580 | $460–1,050 |
| Binh Tan (3) | $310–600 | $460–950 |
Electricity is priced in steps: the more you use, the higher the rate. The tariff in force since 10 May 2025 (Decision 1279/QĐ-BCT, before VAT) is 1,984 VND/kWh up to 50 kWh, 2,050 for 51–100, 2,380 for 101–200, 2,998 for 201–300, 3,350 for 301–400 and 3,460 from 401 kWh. The government is pushing in October 2026 to switch to a 5-tier structure, so this may change soon.
Water costs 6,700 VND per m³ for the first 4 m³ per person per month, then 12,900 and 14,400 VND (VAT and a 30% drainage fee are added). A household usually pays from a few tens of thousands to around 200,000 VND a month, far less than electricity. Most people don't drink tap water, so budget for bottled or delivered water.
| Monthly electricity use | Bill (incl. 8% VAT, approx.) |
|---|---|
| 200 kWh (light AC) | about 475,000 VND (≈ $18) |
| 400 kWh (regular AC) | about 1,160,000 VND (≈ $45) |
| 600 kWh (several units, hot season) | about 1,910,000 VND (≈ $74) |
A meal at a local eatery (com tam, pho and so on) costs roughly 40,000–70,000 VND. Neighbourhood coffee is about 20,000–35,000 VND, while a chain-café cappuccino averages around 47,000 VND. A three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant starts at about 600,000 VND (≈ $23).
Basic supermarket prices (Numbeo, approximate): milk 1 L about 42,000 VND, rice 1 kg about 27,000 VND, 12 eggs about 42,000 VND. For one person, cooking at home and eating out often cost about the same.
⚠ Delivery apps are handy, but delivery and service fees make the same dish more expensive than in the shop. Food spoils quickly in hot, humid weather, so choosing clean places also saves money in the long run.
Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien) single tickets cost 6,000–19,000 VND by card or e-wallet and 7,000–20,000 VND in cash. A day pass is 40,000 VND, a 3-day pass 90,000 VND, a monthly pass 300,000 VND and a student monthly pass 150,000 VND. People aged 60+ and children under 6 ride free. These fares have applied since January 2025; we found no announced change as of October 2026.
Ride-hailing apps such as Grab show the price before you book. Short motorbike rides start in the low tens of thousands of dong; cars cost several times more. Prices rise at peak hours and in rain, so check the app.
⚠ To ride a motorbike yourself you need a driving licence recognised in Vietnam. Riding without one can leave you uninsured after an accident.
Some local private international hospitals list specialist visits at 400,000–600,000 VND and emergency consultations at about 600,000 VND (for example City International Hospital). Foreign-run clinics can cost more, and hospital stays or surgery can reach hundreds or thousands of dollars, so insurance matters.
Foreigners with a work contract of 12 months or more with a Vietnamese employer are generally enrolled in state health insurance (BHYT), paying 4.5% of salary (3% employer, 1.5% employee). BHYT is tied to designated hospitals, so many foreigners also buy private international cover. Premiums vary widely by age and coverage — compare quotes.
International school tuition for 2026-27 is about $8,700–$38,300 per child per year (about 224M–988M VND). Application, enrolment, facility, bus and meal fees are often extra.
| Item | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Specialist visit, international hospital | 400,000–600,000 VND (≈ $16–23) |
| International school, 1 year (1 child) | $8,700–$38,300 |
| Same, divided by 12 months | about 18.7M–82M VND |
| Full-day private preschool, per month (Numbeo, approx.) | about 12.7M VND |
Official fees: e-visa 25 USD single entry, 50 USD multiple entry up to 90 days. A Temporary Residence Card costs 145 USD for up to 2 years, 155 USD for 2–5 years and 165 USD for 5–10 years (Circular 25/2021/TT-BTC). Agencies add their own service fees, which vary. Make sure official receipts are issued, and never accept offers to create or alter documents.
Leaving the country every 90 days means paying for travel, accommodation and a new visa each time; over a year this can cost more than getting proper long-term residence papers.
⚠ Very low cost-of-living figures usually assume a cheap room, short-term traveller habits, and no insurance, school or visa costs. Adding up each line for your own situation (family size, school, area) gives the most accurate picture.
