Visa-free entry: how many days?

• South Korea, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland: 45 days visa-free, any purpose (15 Mar 2025 – 14 Mar 2028, Resolution 44/NQ-CP).

• Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland: 45 days visa-free for tourism (15 Aug 2025 – 14 Aug 2028, Resolution 229/NQ-CP).

• China, Taiwan, USA, Australia: no visa exemption. Use an e-visa (up to 90 days) or a sponsored visa.

• Overseas Vietnamese with a foreign passport, and foreign spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens: a visa exemption certificate valid up to 5 years, up to 180 days per entry.

• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

• Visa-free days are not extended automatically. An extension or a new visa needs a Vietnamese sponsor (company or person). Stay extension fee: 10 USD.

• The old rule of waiting 30 days outside Vietnam between visa-free entries was removed from the law in August 2023, but the e-visa website still mentions it. Border officers make the final decision.

E-visa (up to 90 days)

• Who: any foreign passport holder, applying from outside Vietnam. You cannot apply while you are already in Vietnam.

• Length: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry.

• Fee: 25 USD single entry, 50 USD multiple entry.

• You need: a recent 4x6 cm photo (white background, no glasses or hat, JPG under 2 MB) and a scan of your passport photo page.

• Only official website: evisa.gov.vn (Immigration Department). Many look-alike sites charge extra fees. Only addresses ending in .gov.vn are official.

• In Vietnam, a sponsor can extend your stay (form NA5, 10 USD). If you get a work permit, your sponsor can change you to a work visa.

Temporary residence card (TRC)

• Who can get one: holders of work visas (LĐ1, LĐ2), investor visas (ĐT1, ĐT2, ĐT3), family visas (TT: spouse and children under 18 of visa holders, or the parent, spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen), students (DH), journalists (PV1) and some others. From 1 July 2026 also UĐ1/UĐ2. Not ĐT4.

• How long: workers up to 2 years; family (TT) up to 3 years; some investors and others up to 5 or 10 years. The card must expire at least 30 days before your passport.

Apply where your sponsoring company is registered or where your sponsor lives. You can also file online at dichvucong.bocongan.gov.vn, but the passport must be sent by post.

• Time: 5 working days after a complete application.

Extending or changing your visa in Vietnam

• You cannot extend by yourself. Your sponsor (employer, company you invested in, or a Vietnamese relative) must file for you.

• Form: NA5 with your passport. Fees: stay extension 10 USD, new single-entry visa 25 USD, multiple entry up to 90 days 50 USD.

• Time: up to 5 working days, at the HCMC Police Immigration Division (PA08) or the Immigration Department.

• Changing the visa purpose inside Vietnam is allowed only for: investors, family of the sponsor (parent, spouse, child), people invited to work who have a work permit or exemption, and e-visa holders who have a work permit or exemption.

• Agencies: without a company or relative, people often use an agency that acts as the sponsor. Government fees are the same; agency fees are extra. Any promise outside the legal cases above has no legal basis, and false documents can lead to fines or deportation.

Residence declaration (where you stay)

• Your hotel, guesthouse or landlord must declare you to the local police within 12 hours of your arrival.
